Make URL for Google Maps app for Nokia (symbian)

The iPhone has functionality, when a Google Map URL is typed in (or linked to) a mobile browser, it will open the Google Maps app instead of displaying it in the mobile browser.

Now I'm wondering if the same functionality exists for a Nokia (Symbian) phone? Is there a way to customize the link to open the Google maps app on Symbian phone?

Nokia Ovi Store does something similar, it pops up in the store when you access the URL through a browser. I don't know how they do it though.

Not so easy or useful in all cases, but at least on the latest Symbian ^ 3, if you have Google Maps installed, pointing the browser to the .kml file (with the correct MIME type ) appears to automatically open the file in the Maps application Google.
