Functionality scripts

Can you write a program to do what you are constantly doing on your computer? For example, go to a torrent site and download the .torrent file and then launch it. Or browse folders and extract any RAR files? Or just do whatever monotonous thing you do every day on your computer. It just needs a kick in the right direction.

Thanks, -Pete

This is a rather vague question. Any task can be automated, but the applications required to perform these tasks must provide an interface. Some GUI programs will accept command line parameters so that you can automate their use in batch / script files, but if the programs don't have such an interface then you will be looking at a clunky way of recording mouse movements. Great shout about PowerShell above, but my understanding is that applications need to be coded to support this interface?

On unix-like systems like linux, the philosophy is to have at least a command line interface and possibly a graphical interface. You are more likely to be able to script common tasks on this type of OS than Windows where the UI design philosophy is GUI-centric.

Well

for i in **/*.rar; do unrar e $i; done

will break all the rars possible

as for a torrent thing, you can take perl, find out some kind of http and use the LWP library.

On Windows, command line scripts are severely limited unless you use powershell, which no one else knows about.

Yes, many of these things are possible with the right tools. On UNIX-like operating systems, this kind of scripting is very common. On Windows, it is somewhat smaller.

Your question is very broad. If you have special needs, you must tell us what OS you are using and what other programs you are using. Then people can give you the right directions.

If you are in practice. Linux, have a look at bash scripting .

PowerShell is a pretty powerful scripting environment for this kind of thing if we're talking about Windows.

Maybe go to AutoHotkey .
