Can multiple installations of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or 2008 be combined as a single database cluster?

You can cluster SQL Server 2005 or 2008 with some caveats.

  • I think you need to install SQL Server as a cluster from the beginning. If you already have separate SQL Server instances, you cannot group them ad-hoc. In this case, you will need to reinstall.

  • Clustered instances must have shared storage

  • You must group these instances into the same version and SKU. You couldn't mix 2005 and 2008. Service packs must be the same. You can group different versions of SQL Server .

You cannot "merge" existing database instances into a SQL cluster, but you can install multiple SQL Server instances per cluster and they can be different versions (2005/2008 is good).

If you currently have two database servers and want to "merge them" into a 2-node cluster, you need to reformat one of them, create a cluster with the other, add the reformatted one, and then install SQL Server in cluster mode - installer will detect the cluster and give you a number of special options.
