File size and mime type before upload

I cleared every thread on this forum to try and find an answer before I posted it. Most people say you should just use SWFUpload, some others mention Activex and it keeps going.

I know this is not possible as Google does it with gMail when trying to download a file larger than 25MB or an executable.

My question is how to determine the file size and mime type before the file actually reaches my server.

In the first place I thought it was an impossible task, but Google proves that I am wrong.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer on how to accomplish such a task?

thanks

Gmail uses a flash downloader, check the connection link in Firebug and you can see what it uses uploader/uploaderapi2.swf

. Disable the Flash add-on and it will behave differently.
