How to create a simple browser based IRC browser?
I want to implement a chat service on my site and wonder how to create a simple IRC based browser from scratch?
I have a linux box and can install whatever I want. Google finds instructors on how to set up an IRC server, but no instructions on how to create an IRC client.
(As client languages, I can use JavaScript or Flash.)
As you are already familiar with JavaScript, I would recommend a combination of Node.js, Now.js and node-irc.
Node.js is an application that allows you to run server side JavaScript server and quickly develop web applications.
Now.js is a library for Node.js that allows RPC between client and server. You can simply call a function on the server from your client application and vice versa; their developer guide is actually a web chat;)
node-irc is also a Node.js library that allows you to easily build an IRC client.
Combine the three and you have a very nice, very simple self-coded web chat. There are many possibilities for the browser interface, including application frameworks like ExtJS, JQueryUI, KendoUI, or something else simpler.
