Back button disabled on IE 7.8 for ASP.NET site
On an ASP.NET 3.5 website, we notice that the back button is not working properly. If the user performs multiple postbacks (say 10 times) and then starts clicking the Back button - the Back button is disabled before the user has gone through all the pages. The site does not use AJAX.net.
I can reproduce the problem on IE 7 and 8 almost always. The problem seems to be related to some kind of IE limit on history cache for a given tab / instance. In tests, I made a request to the server large - about 83k, and the responses - a round of 300k. It seems that with these request sizes, the history does not contain more than 4 elements. The moment I hit the 5th post, the first item I selected is discarded.

We faced the same problem. We would load a specific page and after about 5 seconds the IE8 browser history is gone. As a result, history.back () will not work and IE8's back button will not work. Finally, we narrowed it down to a large "viewstate" (in our case, the size of the "viewstate" was the same as 600KB due to the "Repeater" control with "viewstate" enabled). When we turned off the viewstate in the Repeater control, the size was reduced to about 11KB. Now both IE8's back button and history.back () work well.

The user should return to the first page; that the only way I know is to disable the back button in IE (or any other browser). Whether the application has opened another tab; which can cause confusion about how far the back button will go.
Also, is the user asking IE to reapply the changes when they hit the back button? I know this is a problem with ASP.NET sites in general and it can cause problems in the browser with the back button.
