SharePoint approval workflow
I have a custom content type in SharePoint that has an approval workflow associated with it. The content type contains multiple site selection columns. Now you need to change the values of the select columns and update the existing content to reflect the new values.
For instance,
Existing Choices:
Choice 1
Choice 2
Choice 3
New Choices
Choice 1a
Choice 2a
Choice 3
So, some of the options are being renamed.
As far as I can tell, while changing the select column is straight forward, existing list items won't automatically get new values, i.e. a list item with selection 1 selected will still display selection 1 until the list item is physically edited. But editing the item will require re-approval of the workflow. Several lists have several thousand items that will be affected by this change.
So my question is, is it possible to pause or disconnect a workflow while the changes are being made and then re-connect / reactivate after the changes are made, thus avoiding reapproving everything? Or should I take a look at automating reapproval?
Any help is greatly appreciated

You can update values using the object model, the SPListItem.SystemUpdate method , which optionally prevents a new version from being created.
You can use SPSiteDataQuery to find all the elements using your content type and then update them using the method mentioned above.
