Cloud technologies and existing enterprise applications
- What's the point of new cloud platforms and databases like Microsoft Azure and Amazon EC2?
- Is it a replacement for enterprise application platforms like .net or Java EE in the cloud?
- Do I need to use these or other cloud platforms, or can we implement .NET or Java EE in a cloud based environment?

I think the comparison is somewhat wrong. Cloud is a deployment issue and J2EE technology is a development issue. The idea behind the clouds was to remove hardware costs for an existing application that was built on J2EE or .NET or any other application development platform.
Yes, when you deploy your applications to clud, there are some changes and some deployment strategies that could lead to some changes in your application, but the application will still be J2EE or .NET as it was before

I see two kinds of clouds, those that offer their own programming model and those that host applications developed in the existing programming model. Give the choice I would prefer over the latter, I don't want to redo my existing applications and I want to be sure that I can freely host my application on my host.
Anyway, I'm a Java EE developer and Java EE clouds, so I'm fine. So, to me, Azure has little immediate value to reinforce the message that serious sellers are seeing in the future for cloud computing.
Now what is Azure? Is it hosting .NET applications or does it offer a different programming model? Or both? I find it difficult to identify from various websites and reviews. It talks about .NET programming in C # and VB as well as other languages and using existing tools, so in my opinion .NET developers will be at home, but may need to adapt their style.
My preliminary opinion: if I am doing .NET, I will continue to do so and expect to find a suitable cloud one day. If Azure is a cloud (and I want to know) good and good, if not, then I will wait for something better.
In a serious corporate space, I don't need to support a winner in a market that is still evolving. I will probably have sensitive applications that I have no intention of publishing to the cloud at all, so sticking with Java EE is fine for me, I have private cloud capabilities if I need them.

EC2 is a kind of hybrid; at its root is a hosted virtual machine service that lets you pick the operating system you want (most Linux distributions, Solaris, or a couple of Windows Server versions) and then customize them however you like, with no restrictions.
In addition, Amazon has created services such as Simple DB, Simple Queue Service, and Simple Notification Service that make it a large part of the development platform, but it is important to note that they run cross-platform and can be programmed in multiple languages.
