Program the instant messaging message programmatically
Will the script that sets the displayed messages for messengers be simple or complex? After some searching, there doesn't seem to be any information on this at all.
For example, if I had a text file with quotes, is it possible for the message on the google talk display to change to a frequent different quote?

Depends on which client you are using. As far as I know, the google client doesn't offer any interface for plugins, but the open source instant messenger Pidgin works . I think there is already a plugin for what you want to do, but you can write your own using the documentation and examples they give you.
The difficulty of writing something like this is based on how much C or Perl you know, since you can program in either one for Pidgin. Reading code from plugins for other people , you should figure out the Pidgin API.

You can use the Kik API to programmatically send rich content and files between mobile apps. It is available for iPhone and Android platforms and only takes about 5 lines of code to integrate into your application. The API website has more information: http://www.kik.com/dev
Disclaimer: I am working on Kik API developers :)
