Requesting input of this MVC Widget approach

I realize this question is a little subjective, but it seems that best practices are still being developed for ASP.Net MVC.

I went looking for examples of how to implement sub / partial views with their own controllers so that I can create standalone widgets and I came across this article.

This works, but I'm curious if someone with more experience with a similar view can see some of the hurdles I've encountered with this approach.

Typically, your main view model should contain the model data needed to relay to the slice. If necessary, use a composite model or pass additional data through ViewData.
