Best way to post online users with PHP but no MySQL?

I want to make a script that will list online users when they enter a page. An easy way is to register new users in MySQL and list them, for example, every second. But I dont think it is a good idea when thousands of users, for example in facebook app, enter and leave the page. There would be a way with Flash and PHP sockets, but I really don't want to use Flash. So, is there any option?

Assuming you are using a login system, so you have all the information you need somewhere in your database!

you can use sessions!

there is also a stackoverflow solution here

Perhaps you can use Memcache to store user information such as sessions for a lot of frequent requests. I think this is an easy and effective way to do your job.
