Does Microsoft Database project require Visual Studio 2010 Premium or higher? Are there any free open source versions?
I need to know whether to buy VS 2010 premium or not. I have Visual StudioTeam System 2008 Database Edition working on my own version of the team package vs 2008. My colleagues only have a professional VS2008. We now turn to VS2010. We don't have MSDN licenses for our company right now. We only want to buy VS2010 without MSDN. It is very expensive to get 6 licenses for the VS2010 premium. We need to get our database back into original control. We are currently running email scripts and it is very difficult to keep track of them. Are there any non-microsoft solutions that have the same functionality and are free?

For database projects, you definitely want what they call "dude data" (Database Edition) or Team System (for 2008).
In 2010, it's either Premium or Ultimate.
Another option is to move database development to main (no database project) using some ORM tool. Either Linq2Sql, Entity Framework, or a third party solution like nHibernate.
Does the whole team need Premium functionality? Contrary to the title of your question, VS2010 Professional includes a database project. What you don't get is schema comparison, data comparison, data generator, unit testing, refactoring, and static code analysis. So one compromise would be to get one bonus for the person who needs the aforementioned tools and leave everyone else with Professional?

How much time are you wasting in your projects emailing data model changes? How much extra time does the team spend debugging due to using this process? If you add up all this time, see what could have been built instead and the overall happiness of the developers; maybe the price for VS Premium isn't that bad.
Iโm just saying itโs easy to blow off the sticker on the tools until you add up all the wasted time that could have gone into money doing product development.
