Deleted User Data on iPhone

I have written several iPhone applications using Core Data for persistent storage. Everything works fine, but I would like to add the ability for users to back up their data to a PC (via Wi-Fi for a PC) or a web server.

This is new to me, and I cannot figure out where to start researching the problem. I don't want to recomplement the problem if there is an easy way to implement it.

Is anyone familiar enough with what I want to do to point me in the right direction or give me a high level overview of what I should be looking at?

Data is all text and will be perfectly saved in .csv files if that matters.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a good one-size-fits-all solution in the current SDK. Here are some ideas:

  • If you only want a backup, you can just back up the entire sqlite file on the server or over Wi-Fi, but then you won't be able to use it with anything other than Core Data (and you might even run into problems with the iPhone - Mac, for example, between 32-bit and 64-bit types).
  • A very robust solution would be to implement cloud storage with a REST API and sync the iPhone and desktop app to the server (which is what Evernote does , for example), but there is obviously much more to it.
  • You can also manually convert your data to CSV and send it to the server or desktop, but parsing it can be problematic (and you have to worry about data corruption). If you want to go that route, here is a tutorial.
