Uniform formation of points on a 3D field

I would like to generate random points on a 3D field defined by its angles (minx, miny, minz) and (maxx, maxy, maxz). I was thinking of creating a random dot inside the box and then projecting it to one of the sides somehow. However, I don't have clear information about the plane for the sides of the box, and it doesn't look like it will give an even distribution of the points, because if some sides of the window are larger than others, those sides should have more points generated on them.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

or alternately

  • Determine Dot Density
  • Start each side in turn with a random set of dots with that density

which is more uniform (i.e. less random), but will look normal as long as the density is high enough that each side has more than a few points
