Mouse events in JfreeChart

I need a way to distinguish when the mouse event occurs in the chart itself and not in the chartPanel (chart area).

You can use the mouse event from the panel and use ChartMouseEvent.getEntity()

to find out if your chart is over one of the chart objects. See the Api docs for ChartMouseEvent .
