South / Django issues: not recognizing Django app

I have a Django project on my machine and when I try to use South to migrate the data schema I get some odd errors. Example:

$ python manage.py convert_to_south thisLocator

/Library/Python/2.6/site-packages/registration/models.py:4: DeprecationWarning: module sha> is deprecated; use the hashlib module instead to import sha /Users/cm/code/thisLocator/../thisLocator/batches/models.py:6: DeprecationWarning: md5 module> deprecated; use hashlib import md5 instead

There is no compatible app matching 'thisLocator'.

I followed the South documentation. Settings.py has it in installed apps, I can run south import from manage.py shell. All other members of my team call the thisLocator application.

Am I doing something really stupid?

Am I doing something really stupid?

Well, let's start with the "connected" questions:

  • Is your project directory on your Python path?
  • Are you using python manage.py

    and not, say python some/path/i/am/omitting/manage.py

    ? (This is a great way to avoid having a project in the Python path.)
  • What is the conclusion ./manage.py syncdb

    ? (I use ./manage.py instead python manage.py

    if they reference different pythons.)
