UIToolBar - How to deal with button overflow?

I have a view with a toolbar - each button in the toolbar represents a new message that the user creates. It took me a few business days to figure out how to handle switching views etc., but now that it all figured out, I ran into a bit of UI-snafu.

When I have more than 11 buttons (I know the user should really SEND the first 10 before creating the 11th, but I try to be solid) the buttons are fired from the end of the screen. There is no indicator (other than the half-button you see) that there is an additional button (s) that can be pressed.

Has anyone encountered a similar situation before and how did you handle it?

My initial thought is that there are more than (you can say) 8 buttons, I programmatically create the first and last "<" and ">" buttons that slide the buttons down by removing and adding buttons to my [toolbar items] ...

Any thoughts?

Rather than creating a new type of UI for the iPhone (which Apple may or may not accept), it would probably be better if you just tell the user that he has reached the limit and he has to send a message before they can create a new one. Like Safari, when you try to open the 10th webpage.

I think Kane is probably right, but what you are trying to do is very similar to a scrollable tab bar. Three20 offers a class that handles this, or you can implement it yourself. There are no presets in the OS (I think the UI guys would probably mind a lot if you said you were trying to put 10 buttons in there, let alone 10.)
