Gitosis post-update will not start

I'm running cygwin on a Windows Vista pc. Ive installed sshd successfully, configured and built gitosis. I can remotely git clone the gitosis-admin.git repository, make configuration changes, improve and successfully check in cygwin to the machine.

However, no post-update is performed and no new repository (as stated in the config) has been created.

I launched:

chmod 755 /home/git/repositories/gitosis-admin.git/hooks/post-update

and ls -l shows the following:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 git None   69 2010-04-13 22:55 post-update

but on startup:

./post-update

I am getting the following error:

ERROR:gitosis.run_hook:Must have GIT_DIR set in enviroment

I've included in my git.bashrc the line:

GIT_DIR=$HOME/repositories/gitosis-admin.git/

and if I type Set at the prompt, I can see:

GIT_DIR=/home/git/repositories/gitosis-admin.git/

What else can I try because I'm running out of ideas.

First of all, don't install GIT_DIR

- it's not necessary.

Second, I believe your problem is that you have added write permission for the new repo to your Gitosis config, but are not created when you click on your config. This is because adding a new repo to the Gitosis config doesn't create it - it just gives the user permission to create it.

For example, let's say you add this to your Gitosis config:

[group new_repo]
    members = me
    writable = new_repo

When you preempt changes, new_repo

no is created - you just have permission to create it. To create it on the server, create a repo on your local machine and then add the Gitosis server as remote:

$ git remote add gitosis git@git.example.com:new_repo.git

And then push it:

$ git push gitosis master

A new repo will be created when you execute git push

.
