Lost SQL Server Database

This is really weird. I am using SQL Server Express 2005 and have the following connection string (in DotNetNuke web.config):

Data source = ELECTROMORPH \ S15304561; Integrated Security = True; Custom Instance = True

Note that there is no AttachDbFilename parameter, so I'm not sure how the SQL server even knows what to connect to. But it has something to do with something, because the site is up and running and can be updated!

I tried to find all the .mdf files on the server but I don't see any potential candidates. The system databases don't seem to contain any user tables.

Does anyone know if there is a default database that can be used - perhaps that doesn't have the .mdf extension?

This is clearly a reward for adopting the default configuration! I really should know better, but I'm totally here, so any suggestions would be grateful!

Connect to data source using Sql Server Management studio (comes free with Sql Server Express with tools .) Right click on the database and it will show you where the files are stored.

This may be a reference to an instance of SQL Server, so the default directory is used until a specific database is specified, possibly at run time.

Use the following query to identify specific custom instances running under the default SQL Server Express instance.

SELECT owning_principal_name, instance_pipe_name FROM sys.dm_os_child_instances

See this part in custom copies. As for AttachDbFilename

, this parameter can be added at runtime or specified elsewhere. Find the folder App_Data

inside the root directory of the application.

The database name can be different from the physical file name.
Use SQL Server Management Studio to find the file on disk.
