How do I use the Windows API Code Pack in VB.net 2010 Express?
I recently downloaded the Windows API Code Pack for .net, and after seeing the VB.net examples there, I opened them. On creation, I get a warning that the referenced components "Core" and "Shell" were not found. Looking in the code package folder I see that there is no DLL at all, but a lot of C # sources are being loaded instead.
Do I need to load C # Express (which I want to avoid) in order to use the code package or are there precompiled DLLs somewhere?

Yes, this is a problem if you are using Express. While there are many VB.NET code examples demonstrating usage, the implementation is in C # and there is no off-the-shelf version of the assemblies available from the download site. They must be built first before you can sample samples.
To get them, you must run this command from the Visual Studio command line:
cd \whereYouInstalledIt\WindowsAPICodePack\WindowsAPICodePack
msbuild WindowsAPICodePack.sln
But I don't think the Express Edition also installs the "Visual Studio Command Prompt" shortcut in programs. Well, another good reason to upgrade your RTM license.

This is not related to the C # sources, the code package should have both C # and VB.Net samples.
System.Core is one of the .Net framework DLLs, so if your Visual Studio has trouble finding it, it looks like you might have a problem with your .Net installation. Maybe try reinstalling Visual Studio 2010 and / or .Net framework 4.0 and see if that helps.

One thing that might be causing the problem, your VB.net samples were not built in VS 2010 Express and therefore these errors showed up when they were opened in VS 2010 Express.
As ho suggested , try reinstalling .NET framework and / or VS 2010.
Another possible solution is to create the project in the "Release" configuration instead of "Debug".
