Accessing Windows Mobile / CE devices without using activesync / WMDC
I am currently working on an application that works on multiple Windows Mobile and CE devices. The project is written in unmanaged C ++ using MFC. This app also comes with a supporting PC app and we transfer files between them programmatically via activesync / WMDC.
We face many different problems due to the fact that all PCs using our application need to have activesync / WMDC installed on them.
Is it possible to exchange information and files between desktop computers and WM devices that do not use activesync / WMDC? If so, are there any libraries or examples on how to do this?
This only needs to be done in one direction, the desktop app could do all the work if it found out that the device was connected and then move the files. Although it would be more convenient if it worked both ways.
thanks

Activesync will be the most reliable method and will be the same for all Windows mobile devices. Also, you go through a bit of trial and error to see what happens when you connect certain devices to a machine without having activesync installed. If you're lucky, the devices you care about will show up as an external drive.
You also have the option to work with the activesync protocol at a lower level, but this is not what I would recommend as it will probably cause problems for people who have activesync installed.
To get software independence on a PC, I would go for something networked instead - assuming the devices have a network connection, which gives a much better user experience than activesync.
