What is the ideal instance size on ec2 servers for a loaded site, as in the portal
Bandwidth costs for EC2 can quickly spiral out of control. Therefore, if you are expecting a lot of traffic, you might want to look at dedicated hosting solutions.
If you really want EC2, I would suggest starting with the smallest instance and then upgrading to a larger capacity if needed. The best part about EC2 is that you can create an image of your server, and when you want to upgrade, you simply launch a higher capacity instance of that image. This minimizes downtime.

In general, it is best to start with the smallest instance type (m1.small) and then move up as needed. I think in your case, since you have a PHP application, maybe it is CPU and DB related, I would test instances of c1.medium. The reason I think the size might be a better fit is because you are getting 5 vcpus versus 1 vcpu with m1.smalls. You basically get 5x cpu power in just 2x (.10c versus 0.20c / hr). Also in my experience the performance of c1.medium was much more consistent than m1.smalls.

I think the answer lies in the features and load you need for your "portal". "Portal" is such a general name.
- What languages do you need to support?
- What features do you need?
- Do you need terminal access?
- How many users do you expect?
- Are you expecting peaks in visitors (for example, at the moment / day)?
From your tags, I understand that you just need Apache and PHP. There are several hosting services available that support them in both free and professional versions with varying limitations.
Just google for "php hosting" and try to find the one that works best for your needs.
