XQuery as a JSP / Java alternative for web services?
I noticed that DataLogic (or is it MarkLogic?) And SqlServer 2005 both support xquery for accessing RDBMS and (haven't tried it yourself yet) offer xquery inside JSP / ASP. This makes me wonder if Java code can disappear from the presentation layer. That is, the JSP / ASP will only contain html plus xquery code that directly addresses the DBMS, without the usual models and controller levels. The application I mean does not require / use a business rules layer, so I am not worried about that.
Has anyone tried this? (BTW I know xquery needs java to work, I think more about reducing the number of languages, programmers need to learn how to get a web application on the air).

Another approach is to use an XML server that stores XML data and uses XQuery to access and provide the result server side (I work at MarkLogic, we are creating an XML server, try it here: http://developer.marklogic.com / download / )
In this architecture, you have a single server storing XML and executing XQuery. If you are delivering a result formatted as HTML, you now have a two-tier system. You can of course use AJAX to access the XML server in ReST right from within the page.
An extended view of this architecture is called XRX. See this post for more information: http://www.oreillynet.com/xml/blog/2008/05/xrx_a_simple_elegant_disruptiv_1.html
